Cumberland Center woman describes recovery from Traumatic Brain Injury
September 3, 2009
Ninteen years ago, Earlene "Kitty" Ahlquist Chadbourne's life changed forever. What began as a short bicycle ride on a late summer day turned into a life-changing event - an event the author has embraced and turned into a resource for others.

Parenting Myself: Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury, is the account of Chadbourne's 1990 bicycle accident, the serious brain injury she suffered because of it and the nearly two-decade recovery process she has undergone since.

The book tracks her progress from the first days following the accident, when she returned home with no idea of what to expect and few resources for handling brain injuries.

She recalls the horror of discovering that recipes she once prepared with ease were now a mystery. Yes, she could assemble the ingredients for a meal, but she now had no idea what to do with them. Even the process of making a cup of coffee was a mystery at first.

Communication was difficult. The accident had left her with significant hearing loss in one ear. Speaking was hard because she frequently could not bring to mind the words she needed to use.

A skilled knitter before the accident, Chadbourne taught herself to knit again - but in the process discovered that the only instructions that made sense were for left-handed people, even though Chadbourne was right-handed.

"Parenting Myself," is being hailed by experts in the field of Traumatic Brain Injury as a resource for others with brain injuries, including more than 320,000 returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans and 123,000 civilian victims. More about the book may be found at www.parentingmyself.com. It is published by Custom Communications of Biddeford, Maine.
