Saco Bay Trails Offers Activity Booklet for Kids
June 16, 2010
SACO-Saco Bay Trails has released "The Great Outdoors Activity Book," designed for children 5 through 9 for use on trails throughout Maine. The 12-page book was written and researched by park ranger Janet Mangion of Ferry Beach State Park in Saco and Susan Dudley Gold of Custom Communications Inc., a Biddeford firm. Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition, a program of UNE's College of Osteopathic Medicine, provided funding for the project. It has been endorsed by the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks & Lands.

The book contains information on plants and animals likely to live along the trails, coloring pages, word games, an experiment, and other learning exercises to enrich students' nature walks. It is available through Saco Bay Trails or can be downloaded by visiting the organization's website at sacobaytrails.org.

The book also includes information about the 5-2-1-0 program, which encourages children to eat five or more fruits and vegetables a day, limit computer and TV time to two hours a day, get one hour of daily exercise, and have no sugary drinks.

Saco Bay Trails is a a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization whose goal is to acquire permanent public access to recreational hiking trails in the Saco Bay area. The group works with private landowners, community and commercial organizations and government agencies and relies on volunteers for trail maintenance and administrative duties.
